东坝大马灯起源于唐代，灵感源于汉代“骆驼载乐”的表演形式。到了明代，已是商贸重镇的东坝虽庙会繁盛，但春节期间大型娱乐活动匮乏，当地结合水乡多船少马的特点，以竹为骨、绒为皮，饰以马鞍缰绳、铜铃等，创制出可由两人共驭的巨型竹马。演出时，随着乐器伴奏，马队交替布阵，扮演刘备、关羽、张飞等三国人物的演员跃马出征，逐渐形成“七马出征”的固定阵型，成为“江南一绝”。2008年，东坝大马灯入选国家级非物质文化遗产名录。
As an aside: the early 386's POPAD instruction has a famous bug. EAX is written in the RNI (run-next-instruction) delay slot via an indirect register file access -- the only instruction that does this. When the next instruction uses a base+index addressing mode, the register file write from POPAD collides with the EA calculation's register file read, corrupting the address. A fitting example of how complex optimizations can lead to problems.
